Our stone paper is made from 80-90% crushed stone (calcium carbonate) and 10-20% recyclable resins which are used as a binding agent for the stone particles. The end product is similar to traditional wood pulp paper, however, our stone paper is more durable, smoother to write on, waterproof, and naturally bright white.

Unlike traditional paper, stone paper is tear-resistant and more durable. It is smoother in texture and is naturally white without the use of any chlorine or acid. Stone paper is made mainly from crushed stone and a small amount of recyclable resin which acts as a binding agent, therefore it is 100% tree-free, uses relatively zero water, and is free from chemicals. The result of this simple process is much more environmentally friendly than the manufacturing of traditional paper. The production of stone paper uses 75% less energy and reduces our carbon footprint by more than 50%. To put things into perspective, each metric tonne of stone paper saves 18 large timber trees, 2770 liters of water, 950 kg of carbon dioxide, and 4720 kilowatts of energy.

Calcium carbonate is one of the world’s most abundant resources but it is not an easily renewable material because stone and rock take such a long time to form. That’s why stone paper manufacturers gather used stone, mainly limestone, from quarries, construction sites, and other places that generate stone waste and turn it into paper.

There is no need to use harmful chemicals or toxins such as chlorine or acid to bleach our stone paper as it customary with traditional wood pulp paper, because our paper is made mainly of calcium carbonate, or crushed limestone, which is naturally bright white.

Both the production and consumption of our notebooks are non-wasteful and kind on the environment. We like to keep hold of our notebooks and revisit them every now and again, but if you are to dispose of yours, we recommend putting them in your category 2 plastic recycling stream thanks to the small amount of high- density polyethylene resins used, they are 100% recyclable. If you can’t recycle your notebook, we advise disposing of them in your waste bin to be recycled as energy. No harmful gasses are released and the paper will be reduced back to its original form of calcium carbonate, chalk powder, which can then be used as a filler in recycled products. Hopefully, your notebook won’t end up in a landfill, but if it does, it will be easily broken down by the sun and will begin to crack like an eggshell under sunlight in 9-1 months, it is 100% photodegradable!

The paper inside our notebooks and journals is made primarily from calcium carbonate, which is one of the basis of natural coating that acts as a layer of protection against all types of weather or spillages.

It’s not easy to describe our stone paper; creamy could be the best way, or velvety, silky maybe? It contains no bumps or grains, meaning your pen will glide smoothly and effortlessly across the page.

We have written with many different types of pens and pencils on our notebooks and all have worked just fine. Since stone paper absorbs less ink, it looks cleaner with zero bleed through, however, we discovered that the thicker the ink is, the better the result. Less watery ballpoints and pencils are on point, whilst rollerballs, gel pens, and pins (our favourite!) glide across the page with no issues at all. More watery inks like the kind found in fountain pens may require a bit more patience to fully dry, but altering your grip and press will help with that!
